Ministry Passion Scale

Initial development phase

The ‘Passion Scale’ describes a person's passion for an activity in their life. Passion can be helpful, where the person is in control of the activity. This is called harmonious passion. Harmonious passion gives us enthusiasm, focus and energy to do a task. Passion can also be unhelpful. This is called obsessive passion. Passion is obsessive when it dominates a person's life at the expense of other areas, such as one's commitments to friends and family.

Passion has been linked to sustainability in ministry. The most passionate ministers at greatest risk of leaving the ministry in their early years of service. Yet for many their passion for their ministry enables them to be effective and enthusiastic in their service for the Kingdom. If we can better understand the passion we have for our ministry, we can build on our harmonious passion and mitigate the effects of obsessive passion. This will enable us to engage in better self-care and to be better prepared to remain in our ministry for the long haul.

We are in the process of developing and evaluating the Ministry Passion Scale, a form of the Passion Scale adapted for use by Christians. It is planned for use as a self-awareness tool. The author also plans to engage in wider research on the topic as part of wider research into ministry health and sustainability. Your completion of the survey will assist in the development effort.

The survey will take less than 15 minutes to complete.

Your data will only be accessible to the researchers and will never be shared or reported in a way which permits any individual to be identified.

You may opt out of this research at any time before completing the survey by closing your web browser.

The survey’s author Dr Nigel D. Pegram can be contacted by email at npegram@harvest.edu.au.

The survey is conducted under the auspices of Harvest Bible College Inc, and has obtained ethical clearance from the Christian Research Association, Australia.
